Evaluation of Continuity Sequence

Narrative

A film about two boys meeting up and exchanging a package for money.

Mise-En-Scene

The prop in our film was a bag of sugar which was resembling a bag of cocaine. When filming with the package we tried to keep it hidden as much as possible as you would in real life. It is an illegal substance so it has to be kept hidden. The exchange of the package was almost unnoticeable, the package was past over smoothly and the money was handed over.

When the boy received the package he walked back to his home (college) to take the drugs. I think that the way he walked back with the bag was quite unrealistic and could be changed if we were to do this task again. We didn't think this part of the film through properly and maybe next time he could have a backpack or something to hold the bag.

I think that the way the character took the drug was rather realistic and from the close-up of the drug getting sniffed, it looks fairly believable.

The hand over was taken with many different shots to show how smooth and discreet it was. The reason we done this with different shots is because from the first shot of the handover you can barley see the exchange.

Lighting

We set the camera up to match the lighting outside so none of our shots were under or over exposed. We used in ISO of 200 as it was a bright day and the aperture set too F11 and the shutter speed set too around 1/160 of a second.

When filming we didn't really focus on the lighting but it was mostly done using natural light from the sun when outside. When we were inside we set the white balance to auto so all the shots had perfect lighting for the scenario of the clips.

I think that if we were to do this again then it could of been a darker room where the character consumed the drugs and we could of used a light to shine on the character.

Different shot distances

We used a long distanced shot to show the fear on the boys face whilst walking with the package. From the way he is walking and looking out you can see that he is anxious of being caught. It is a long shot but as the character gets close to the camera it becomes more of a close up. The way he is walking towards the camera forces the viewer to wonder where he is going.













Camera movements

For the scene of the character consuming the substance, we used a tracking shot. We done this along with a pov & a close up. The reason we used this is so that the whole situation looked more realistic. We then used the character to tilt the camera up to show a blurry image. This whole scene was pov to make the viewers feel almost as if they are the people consuming the drug and going out of focus. I think that with these shots we maybe could of used a tripod to produce a more still film but what we done wasn't overly bad. We also included a dutch angle in the end to show how the character is dizzy and blurred.

Match cuts on action

Throughout our film we used a few cuts. The reason we used these was to make the film more fast paced and look more professional. I believe that without the cuts the film would be too slow and boring. With these cuts i also think its a good idea for the viewers to see whats going on from different angles to feel more what its like from the characters perspective.

The first cut is right at the start when there is a shot of the dealer walking past the camera through the woods and then cutting to the character walking out of the woods. We done this to set the scene so the viewers can see where the character is located.

We also included some more such as the part when there is a close up of the boy unlocking the door and then cut to him walking through it, and when the boy walks towards the camera and then cuts to him walking away from the camera. All these cuts were used to cause tension and drama.

Summary

Overall i think that for the first little film i have featured in, everything turned out really well. I didn't shoot any of the clips myself by i tried my best to help Joe with camera angles and gave my input into everything i thought would be good, he agreed with most of my ideas and we all worked well as a group. All the shots, in my opinion, came out really well and there isn't much i could say needs too much improvement.

Connotation Photos

1. Love

This image is taken with a long shot using the characters to show the setting. You can tell that this is a love shot from the way the characters are acting towards each other showing passion and happiness.

2. Purity

This image is an extreme close up. It shows a blue eye.This image resembles purity because of the blonde hair and blue eyes. It symbolizes innocence.

3. Fear 

This image is a high shot which shows fear. The character shows fear how he is acting and looking rather scared and worried. Not only the character shows fear but the high angle which the image has been shot with shows us how we are above the character and he is smaller than us, feeling isolated and scared.

4. Friendship

This is a wide angle of three people walking along. It shows how they are happy and all getting along really well. The lens flare on this image also brightens the mood and shows how it is a happy image.

5. Wealth

This image is a low angle showing wealth. The picture shows to boys getting into an expensive car. This means they have done well and are extremely wealthy. It is taken with a low angle to show how they are above most people (bigger and better) as they can afford nice things and live a happy life.

6. Greed

This is a close up of a boy looking excited for having lots of sweets. It shows greed because he wants more than one sweet so instead gets a basket full. This is a close up because it shows the excitement on the boys face for having all these sweets.

7. Danger

This image was shot using a wide angle. The wide angle was used to show the surroundings. The reasons why the surroundings where needed is because it shows danger signs. These signs were included because it shows that this area is out of bounds therefore the boy is risking his life.

8. Desire

This picture is shot using a wide shot it shows the boys desire to skate. The way he is holding his skateboards makes you wonder what he is thinking and shows that he is eager to skateboard.

9. Poverty

The way this image resembles poverty is from the character looking upset and lonely. He is sat outside on a bit of cardboard as he has no home. We used a high angle again to show how little he is compared to everyone else, and how everyone looks down to him

10. Loneliness

This is a wide angle shot of a boy standing by himself looking lonely. The way the character is standing and looking into empty space signifies he is bored and thinking hard. His posture also symbolizes his loneliness
