DepicT film reviews

Cool Unicorn Bruv

This short film shows a man trying to sell his bike in the middle of the street, his focus on the bike is then moved to a white 'unicorn' coming down the street. The man selling the bike lost out on money due to the fact the other man was more interested in the unicorn and curious to what it's capable of.

This 90 seconds clip was by far my favorite on www.depicT.org. I found that this film was very humorous and entertaining. I like the way that they have took people, who would be known as 'chavs' to create this humor. They all speak in slang, using words like 'innit' and 'bruv' but the way one is walking down the street with a white horse kind of takes the 'thug look' out of him.

The way in which the man was trying to sell his bike at the start of the film i found amusing. The way he was describing the bike to have all the best equipment on it when you can see its just an old tatty bike. I found that the only reason this film was funny is because of the characters in it. I believe that if this film was re made using different actors of a high class, with posh accents then it most likely wont be so good.

Night Lights

This short film is done using stop motion. It has been created by using a slow shutter speed to create interesting light drawings. With the light drawings they have staged a little story which i think they have done really well, it looks almost as if stop motion isn't actually involved.

I have shot light images using slow shutter speed before and it isn't and easy task drawing a structured shape, so the way which they have done many and linked them together to make it look as if it is moving is really clever. The score/soundtrack they have used is also really good. Whilst watching with headphones it seems as if you are actually there as they have used 3D sound.

They have created a film which interpenetrates a date between too people, sitting down, going to the cinema, and then standing outside watching the sunset, just without real people.

Salt

This is a shot film which shows an old couple sitting down for there dinner. The film starts off with a lot of tension between the man and his wife. By the look on his face it is a wonder to why he is angry and it made me eager to find out what was going on. The man made a slight choking noise when swallowing his mouth full and his wife gave him a dirty look. The whole time throughout the start of this film you wonder why there is so much tension. All tension is broke when the women sits down with her bowl and they both crack out laughing.

I think that the way they have done this is really impressive because it has you on the edge of your set until you find out there isn't any stress. I think that the camera work in this is also very good as you keep seeing a close up of the mans face which forms you to consider that he is angry with his wife. The laugh at the end is a relief but also irritating as you have been waiting too see the negative outcome.

A TV Movie

This short film is weird but slightly humorous. The film is about a TV sitting at home relaxing and watching itself. What i find interesting about this is the fact that it is a TV and it is wheeling around and getting comfortable to watch itself in the mirror.

The way they have created this film is quite surreal. The idea of having a TV actually watch TV is quite ironic. From the filming and the surrounding of the TV you can see that this is quite an old film. The TV is vintage and all the room/furniture looks old.  There isn't much to think about whilst watching this film which i like, they have come up with such a simple but effective idea which caught my attention.
